Dear Mayor Helen Tran and Honorable Members of the San Bernardino City Council,
I write to respectfully urge you to **oppose the proposed one-year moratorium on the
sale and use of Safe and Sane fireworks** (Council Member Ortiz p. 902) within the City
of San Bernardino. As a concerned resident and advocate for community partnerships, I
believe this measure would inadvertently harm the very efforts to address illegal
fireworks while depriving our city’s public charities of critical funding.
The Safe and Sane booths are a staple upon which local nonprofits, youth sports
leagues, schools, and community organizations rely on fireworks sales as a vital
fundraising opportunity. These groups provide essential services to our residents, and a
moratorium would devastate their ability to support our community.
I urge the Council to consider alternatives that address illegal fireworks without harming
our community’s ability to celebrate safely and support local causes such as:
Collaborate with nonprofits** to promote safe celebrations and reporting mechanisms.
The residents of San Bernardino deserve solutions that protect public safety and
preserve our American traditions. Thank you for your time and consideration. I am happy
to provide further input or collaborate on solutions that balance enforcement with
community needs.
Sincerely,
Queena Jones,
SBHS, Class of ‘98
