Hello,
I am writing in support of Commissioner Victor Suarez and to express concern over the City’s
decision to hold a special meeting about a private resident’s personal life. Mr. Suarez was my
former teacher, and I have always admired his dedication to our community. He taught us the
importance of standing up for what is right.
In school, we learned about periods in history—like Nazi Germany—where those in power
punished anyone who spoke out against them. Is this what our city is becoming? Will I also be
questioned simply for exercising my right to free speech?
As a student, I walked the streets of this city every day. I saw broken sidewalks, used needles,
trash, homelessness, prostitution, and drug use—year after year. Nothing has changed. Some
members of this Council have been in office since I was in elementary school, and now, as a
graduate, I see the same problems every time I drive through our city.
I am disappointed that the Mayor and Council are choosing to spend taxpayer dollars targeting
a volunteer, a respected educator, and a loving father instead of addressing the real needs of
the residents they claim to represent. If anything, this motivates my peers and me to question
our local government and to use our voices—and our votes—to demand true leadership.
