Dear Mayor,
My name is Jenn Grace, and I am writing as both a fellow art educator and a long-time San
Bernardino resident to express my strong support for Commissioner Victor Suarez, as well as
my deep concern regarding the City’s decision to convene a special meeting focused on a
private resident’s personal life.
Our community is facing critical challenges: rising crime, deteriorating infrastructure,
homelessness, and a lack of meaningful investment in our neighborhoods. Yet, instead of
dedicating time and taxpayer resources to addressing these urgent issues, Councilwoman
Sandra Ibarra has chosen to pursue the scrutiny of a private citizen’s personal matters. This is
not leadership. It reflects a troubling misuse of authority and a concerning waste of public
resources that should be directed toward improving the lives of San Bernardino residents.
Equally alarming is the clear double standard and apparent retaliation at play. While
Commissioner Suarez has been thrust into the public spotlight, the staff member who involved
herself in his personal affairs and treated him with hostility has faced no investigation, no
disciplinary action, and no accountability. Targeting the individual who raised legitimate
concerns rather than the staff member whose conduct was inappropriate not only undermines
principles of fairness, it raises serious First Amendment implications. This kind of retaliatory
action exposes the City to unnecessary legal risk at a time when our resources are already
strained.
Residents deserve a city government focused on real solutions, not political theater. I urge the
Council to redirect its attention toward the pressing needs of our community and to put an end
to actions that misuse public power and erode public trust. Commissioner Suarez has
demonstrated his commitment to serving San Bernardino through his work on the Art &
Historical Preservation Commission, and he should be allowed to continue that work without
retaliation or undue political interference.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Sincerely,
Jennifer Grace, MFA
