I am writing in support of Mr. Victor Suarez and to express concern over
the City’s decision to hold a special meeting about a private resident’s
personal life. Mr. Suarez was my former teacher. He. Like many other
teachers, he taught us to speak up when something is wrong and to stand
firmly in our values.
In history class, we learned about the Civil Rights Movement—how
everyday people who dared to speak out against injustice were often
targeted, intimidated, or punished by those in power. It’s unsettling to see
echoes of that behavior in our own city. Is this the direction our local
government is heading? Will students like me also be questioned simply
for using our voice?
Growing up, my classmates and I spent years wishing for improvements in
youth programs, parks, and safe public spaces—basic things that help
young people feel connected and supported by their city. Instead, we
watched opportunities fade, community centers decline, and after-school
spaces remain underfunded or ignored. Many of us ended up seeking
activities or support outside the city because we felt ours wasn’t investing
in its young people.
Now, seeing the Mayor and Council prioritize targeting a volunteer
commissioner over addressing the real needs of residents only reinforces
why so many young adults feel disconnected from this city. It’s hard to feel
pride in a place where leadership focuses more on personal vendettas
than on building a community that we can thrive in and want to stay part
of.
Thank you.
