Council Members,
Let’s call this what it really is.
This amendment is not reform.
It is not accountability.
It is not about the community.
It is a power grab.
Right now, the mayor is chosen by the people of San Bernardino. If this passes, the mayor will
be chosen by you. That is not democracy that is insiders protecting insiders.
You are not expanding the people’s voice. You are taking it away.
San Bernardino voters did not ask for this. They did not vote for this. And they did not give
you permission to rewrite the rules to benefit yourselves.
An at-large mayor exists for one reason to represent the entire city, not political deals made
behind closed doors.
You were elected to serve the people, not to outmaneuver them.
Let’s be clear:
Taking away the public’s right to elect the mayor is not reform it is a betrayal.
And don’t misunderstand this moment.
The people are paying attention.
They will remember who defended democracy and who tried to take it from them.
