Dear City Council Members, I am writing to strongly oppose any effort to ban or severely restrict short-term rentals, including Airbnb, within our city. Short-term rentals are not just a convenience—they are a vital part of our local economy. They support tourism, bring in consistent revenue for local businesses, and provide homeowners with an important source of supplemental income, especially during times of rising living costs. For many residents, the ability to host short-term guests is what allows them to afford their homes in the first place. A blanket ban or overly aggressive restrictions would unfairly punish responsible property owners while doing little to address the root causes of housing concerns. Instead of eliminating short-term rentals altogether, the city should focus on balanced, enforceable regulations that promote accountability without stifling economic opportunity. Additionally, visitors who stay in short-term rentals often contribute directly to neighborhood businesses—restaurants, shops, and services that rely on tourism. Removing this option risks reducing foot traffic and revenue in areas that benefit most from it. There are reasonable alternatives to a ban: clear registration systems, occupancy limits, noise enforcement, and taxation structures that ensure fairness while preserving this valuable industry. Many cities have successfully implemented such measures without resorting to outright prohibition. I urge the council to consider a more measured approach that protects both residents and economic vitality. Banning short-term rentals outright would be a step backward—one that limits opportunity, reduces tourism, and negatively impacts the very community it aims to protect. San Bernardino City is about rehabilitating people and communities who need help or assistance, as one who was raised and now works for the city, I know that it is in the council’s and city people’s best interested to keep Air Bnb active and alive within the city limits. Please make the right decision. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely, A fellow essential worker (nurse) in the San Bernadino school district.
