Good evening Mayor and City Council Members,
My name is Michael, and I am a former student scholar of the Akoma Unity Center. I am here today to speak in
strong support of Akoma and the impact it has had on my life and the lives of many others in our community.
Because of Akoma, I was given the tools, guidance, and opportunities to succeed beyond high school. That
foundation led me to attend Western New Mexico University, where I have been able to grow both academically
and professionally. I currently serve as a student government senator, was the president of the Black Student Union
for two years, and worked as a resident assistant for two years. Outside of campus, I am a community radio DJ and a
licensed insurance agent, all while working toward my bachelor’s degree in accounting.
Programs offered through Akoma, such as the Young Legislators Program led by Eloise Gómez Reyes, showed me
the importance of leadership, civic engagement, and giving back to my community. These experiences shaped who I
am today and gave me direction at a young age.
Akoma is more than just a building, it is a foundation for success, a safe space, and a vital resource for youth and
families in San Bernardino. My story is just one example of the long-lasting impact this center has had.
I strongly urge you to support the renewal of Akoma Unity Center’s lease so that future generations can continue to
benefit from the same opportunities that helped shape my life.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
